If you're making the switch to Canvas, you might be wondering what will happen to all the resources you've created in Google. The good news is that you don’t have to start over. Canvas integrates with Google tools, allowing you to bring your favorite Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, and more into your Canvas courses. This means you can leverage the strengths of both platforms to enhance your teaching without losing the materials and workflows you’ve come to rely on.
Watch the video below to watch a quick comparison of the two platforms.
How do I actually use my Google content in Canvas?
Now that you've explored why you might want to use Canvas, let's look at the ways you can integrate your Google materials. In the next section, you can explore step-by-step instructions for embedding Google documents and slides and integrating Google resources within assignments and the rich content editor.
You can return to these instructions as many times as you need as you build your new skills. And we know it's not always easy, but we hope you can give yourself the same time, patience, and understanding you would offer to students as you learn something new.

All About Google LTI 1.3
Google LTI 1.3 is an external tool integration that allows you to connect everything in your Google Drive to Canvas. Using Google LTI 1.3, you can easily upload Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Sites into whatever you're creating in Canvas, whether it's an announcement, a quiz, a page, or a module. Students can also use Google LTI 1.3 to upload material from their Google Drive into assignments.
There are two different Google LTIs
- Google LTI 1.3 is the newer external tool integration. This feature is supported by Google and has a similar look and feel to the Google Classroom experience. What sets the 1.3 integration apart from the older Google Apps/Google Cloud Assignments integration is the ability to access shared drive files.
- Google Apps/Google Cloud Assignments is the older external tool integration. This feature is still available but will at some point become disabled once the newer 1.3 integration is fully functional.
